Q:    What is a Misdemeanor?


A:     Generally, at common law, crimes that are punishable by confinement of less than a year are misdemeanors.


        In Texas however, there are 3 types of misdemeanor categories with different ranges of punishment:


  1. (1) Class A Misdemeanors - punishable by less than 1 year in county jail


  1. (2) Class B Misdemeanors - punishable by less than 180 days in county jail


  1. (3) Class C Misdemeanors - punishable by a fine only (not to exceed $500)
